ESL Students



Having several ESL students this past year, I learned how to adapt each and every lesson. By giving the students a visual, they were able to create a product just like all the other students in my classroom. It was a touch and go process, making mistakes, fixing the mistakes and trying again.

Differentiated Instruction - Autism



Students having Autism has been my hardest obstacle crossing. I was not sure how to handle the students. With the help of many Learning Support Teachers, I was able to cross the river. Again, this was touch and go with final success.

Using JING

What is JING, JING is a free online tool which enables you to create screen shots of anything found on a computer. I used JING for instruction. If a student was absent, he/she could go to my Moodle page for help with any topic which was missed. I also watched many different students using JING as reminders. JING captures the screen allowing audio. This enables not only visual access but also audio access reaching many different learning styles.

Reflection on 2010-2011

One of the issues I have had to overcome this school year is the fact I have been traveling since August. Traveling to three different classrooms, teaching 5 classes a day, has caused different challenges.

I teach in Miss Carriato's lab 1st and 2nd period. Travel to Miss Mullikins's room for 2 periods and end up in Mr. Beamers room.

To begin the school year, I was carrying around my needed items in my computer bag. Just to realize only after 2 days this would not work. So I brought in a milk crate. This did the trick toting my schedules and class activities, computer, power cord, and personal items. The next problem I ran into, was not always having all the "stuff" I needed. I conquered this by taking a cart to Miss Carriato's room, asking for shelf room in Miss Mulliken's room. Mr. Beamer's room is close enough to my office, that I can run down to my office if I forget something.

Motivating Students

Rules and environment
I have struggled most in keeping my students motivated. I have taken several classes on motivation. I have learned that movement plays a key role in motivation.

Because movement is such a vital part of motivation, I incorporate "Brain Breaks" in my classes. We have melted, did mirror images, played ship and sailors, created a thunderstorm, created sounds of popcorn and list goes on. When I see a great motivating activity, I try it with my 6th graders and move on from there.
I have a student keep attendance daily, this relieves my time to answer questions when students come into class.

For my 6th graders, below are the jobs assigned each MP to different students.
  • Keyboards
  • Mice
  • Orange Skins/wipes
  • Attendance
  • Headsets
  • Bag and basket
My main rule during my classes are:
  • Respect each other - if someone needs help, help them
  • No touching of another classmates equipment (mouse, keyboard)
  • We work had and have developed a wonderful classroom environments.
